It was during the royal court of Emperor Napoleon that the sleigh bed model originates. Roman antiquities that were being discovered at the time influenced the court. The Empire design of the early 1800′s can trace it roots to this Roman influence.

The term sleigh bed relates to the shape of the bed. The large outward curving headboard and smaller footboard joind by rails make the bed resemble an old fashioned horse drawn sleigh. Typical wood sleigh beds are very common and are rather heavy. Many different materials besides wood such as iron and aluminum are used in the construction of sleigh beds and they are offed in many different models.

When selecting a wood sleigh bed the primary consideration will the the type of wood finish you prefer.
